Louis Hawkins work ranges across a number of disciplines including painting, film-making and poetry. As a painter his work is inspired by abstract impressionism and the St Ives movement, although he prefers to avoid any forms of categorisation and simply labels himself as an abstract colourist. Using a variety of techniques including frottage, loose boundary hydraulics and monotype, his work aims to detail visual memories and in particular the abstracted forms, textures and colour themes of dreams and the subconscious. He also draws on cartographic and sub aquatic images and forms to explore the planes and densities of elevation and altitude. He is based at Widcombe Studios in Bath, UK where he experiments with the vocabularies of texture and colour using acrylic, gouache and watercolour. His paintings have widely exhibited in galleries and private collections in London and the West Country.
